–– Osage Orange ––

Other Names: hedge-apple, horse apple, bodark, bodock, bowwood, and bois d’arc (French)

Number of Species: 1

Family: Moraceae

Genus/Species: Maclura pomifera

Leaf: Simple alternate, deciduous, 2–5 inches in length, ovate with a long and pointed tip, toothless margin, bright green above and paler below. Leaves contain a milky sap. Thorns grow upon the twigs.

Bark: Brown to gray, deeply furrowed with wavy vertical ridges, inner bark is orange

Fruit: Very large round light green fleshy ball, 3–6 inches in width, creamy white sap, contains many brown seeds

Magickal Properties and Lore: Protection, endurance, and fertility. Place the fruit under your bed or in a window to repel spiders and unwanted insects such as mosquitoes, roaches, and ticks. The fruit contains elemol, which is just as effective for repelling insects as deet. The wood is hard and decay-resistant and can be a very effective wand.

Practical Uses: The Osage Amer-Indians used this wood to make bows and other weapons. This tree, because of its thorns, used to be planted in rows to serve as a natural fence before barbed wire came into being. The inner bark can be used to make yellow dye. Use the fruits as a natural insect repellent.
